What Elle Wears to Work

Elle Magazine has to be my favourite Fashion magazine to read.  Their articles are great and their continual report on fashion is quirky, fresh and easy to read. There is no wonder that the people who create Elle are, in my mind, the bees knees. This is one online column which I love and do keep up to date with: What Elle wear to work. Here are some of my favourite recents.

I love this column because it is essentially street style: how real people wear amazing clothes.  Of course they have access to the latest and greatest garments, have a professional in-house photographer, have an air-brusher and probably stage every single one of these photos. However, I cant help but buy into the ideology that the Elle photographer just caught these babes on their lunch break... That is half of Fashion though isnt it?  - The illusion.

Rihanna's Collection for River Island

The collaboration between River Island and Rihanna has been long awaited and finally it is here. I bring to you a sneak peak of the clothes that will be hitting the high street shop's floors.

So what is the overall impression?  I am not that impressed.  We (the British public) have been emulating aspects of Rih Rih’s style for a while now: She brought the GEEK tops to the front of main stream fashion, she (consciously or subconsciously) encouraged young girls to wear shorts that refuse to coverthe arse and she endorsed the flat cap trend that has been sweeping the nation.  These were the clothes I was expecting to see within this collaboration. I was wrong.

Rihanna’s style is edgy.  She has gained fashion points from the alternative way she wears designer’s clothes (usually a bit risqué). Her programme, Styled to Rock featuring Henry Holland, her stylist Lysa Cooper and Nicole Roberts, also affirmed her knowledge and influence on fashion.  What I find odd about this collection is that I think it looks cheap. Not that I personally know Rihanna, but this collection looks as if she has said to a group of designers, ‘these are my favourite outfits I have worn, base my collection on these outfits.’

Post Secret

I have been following post secret on and off for many years.  If you havent heard of the website, it blogs peoples secrets that they post.  The idea is that one's secret becomes art. The secrets are anonymous and treated with confidentiality. By expressing a secret, and sending it off to the post secret organisation, the burden of carrying a secret is alleviated.

What I love about the site is that unlike most or all blogs, this blog makes you feel more secure rather than insecure.  Sometimes I feel that the narcissism of blogging is damaging.  Most blogs feed on glamour.  The blogger has the wardrobe you want, has the cooking skills you want, or even has the hair, legs, bum and tum that you want. Post secret is the opposite of that because it doesn't reveal its subjects as commercialised models, chefs or people; with anonymity that facade is broken, and real secrets alongside human insecurity is revealed.  When I read post secret I remember that no one is perfect and we all share the same secrets.  Here are some recent secrets.

Post Secret updates its blog every Sunday.
